The Storm Will Pass

The weather forecast for this little corner of my world today is “iffy”. Thunderstorms are predicted for the remainder of the day, so I am sitting by the pool enjoying God’s creation for as long as I can.

The sky looks dark and ominous over the water, and I can hear the thunder crashing in the distance. Looking at this storm unfolding in front of me, I find myself humming the old hymn my Grandma Pearl once told me was her favorite. “‘Til the storm passes over, ‘Til the thunder sounds no more ‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of thy hand. Keep me safe ‘til the storm passes by.”

Storms—2022 has been a year of intense storms for many of us. It seems like everyone is fighting some sort of battle. Our country is in quite a mess and the news each day seems more grim than the day before. *Shootings and murder *Health issues *Rising gas and grocery prices *Family issues I could go on but we all experience it daily and you have your own concerns. Today, and every day, I am grateful and confident that God holds me in the palm of his hand.

The wind is picking up and I am beginning to feel raindrops hitting my skin. I look around and see an open table with an umbrella. Grabbing my notebook, I pick up my bag and head across the pool area to the covered table. Perfect! I am covered. The storm is all around but I am dry and protected.

Listening to the rain is peaceful. Watching the raindrops drip from the ends of the bamboo umbrella is mesmerizing. I could sit here for hours!

As I watch the rain all around me, I am struck by the similarity between my situation and the promises in Psalm 91. I am surrounded on all sides by wind and rain but, under this umbrella, I am safe and dry.

David writes in Psalm 91:1-6 “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

No matter what sort of storm you are facing today, know that as Psalm 91:14-16 states: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Life is tough and each day brings new challenges and battles. As I sit under this umbrella, I am grateful that God’s Word promises us protection and refuge in the middle of life’s storms.

If you are surrounded by storms, reach out and ask for God’s help. He is faithful and will be a shelter for you in the midst of the storm. (Isaiah 25:4)

“Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of thy hand. Keep me safe ‘Til the storm passes by.”
